Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a horrible start against Mumbai Indians in the first match after resumption on the IPL 2021 as they lost three wickets in three overs and also lost Ambati Rayudu, who left the field retired hurt after Adam Milne's short ball hit straight onto his arms and he couldn't continue after the same. CSK were in deep trouble and if they weren't till then they also lost skipper MS Dhoni too in the last over of the powerplay.

CSK chose to bat first after winning the toss but nothing went well for the men in yellow as Mumbai Indians' new-ball New Zealand pair of Trent Boult and Adam Milne triggered a mini-collapse as they kept losing wockets from the start.

Faf du Plessis chipped a wide delivery from Boult straight to the gully fielder, Milne in the very first over of the game. Milne, in the next over, dismissed Moeen Ali getting him caught out in the covers, while Boult in his next removed Suresh Raina, who went for a wild swing and couldn't get anywhere from the middle of the bat and handed a simple catch to the point fielder as CSK were in deep trouble.

Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad started the rebuilding process and just when they looked like getting through the powerplay without any more hiccups, the skipper fell into Milne's short ball trap as he hit straight into the hands of the square leg fielder as CSK were reduced to 24/4.
