Upton has a close history with Rajasthan Royals (RR) as he was their head coach for four years wherein the team made it to the semi-finals in 2013 and also reached the final of the Champions League the same year.
The Royals won 13 straight home matches under him, a feat that stands the test of time in the IPL.
"When it comes to T20 leagues, Upton’s experience and insights are invaluable. He has guided and mentored several teams across the globe, be it in IPL, Big Bash or Pakistan Super League. As coach of Sydney Thunder for four years, his success is well charted.
Under him the Sydney Thunder made a dramatic turnaround in their fortunes. From finishing with a wooden spoon for three previous seasons and enduring a 19-game losing streak, Sydney Thunder went on to win the 2016 Big Bash League title," read the statement from Royals.
“The experience and knowledge that he brings to the table is unparalleled. As a coach, mentor and scientific trainer, Paddy Upton is well versed with the rigours of modern day sport.
