IPL 2019: Mumbai Indians send Kolkata Knight Riders packing, Sunrisers Hyderabad sneak through

The Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders' game at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night was touted to be a blockbuster clash apart from it being a high-profile on-field rivalry.

It was a do-or-die match for Kolkata to stay in the league and for Mumbai, a win would ensure they top the table.

However, the match turned out to be a one-sided affair. Much to the joy of Mumbai fans, their team got past Kolkata by nine wickets in the last league encounter of 12th edition of the IPL.

MI chased down KKR's target of 134 with nine wickets and 23 balls to spare.

With this defeat, KKR were knocked out of the league and Sunrisers Hyderabad qualified for playoffs stage, thanks to a better net run rate. And Mumbai Indians sit well perched on top of the points table.

MI captain Rohit Sharma led from the front slamming a well crafted 55 not out and ensured there were no hiccups in the chase of a low total for his home team. He was supported well by Suryakumar Yadav (46 not out).

Opener Quinton de Kock gave a fiery start with his 23-ball 30 which included three sixes before he got out to pacer Prasidh Krishna as KKR captain Dinesh Karthik took a stunning running catch of him.

Sharma, meanwhile, continued his assault executing some spectacular horizontal cuts and pulls en route to his match-winning knock.

Yadav finished the game with a six off pacer Andre Russell when six was needed from 24 balls.

Earlier put into bat, KKR failed to put up a fight as they huffed and puffed their way to a mediocre total of 133/7 in the stipulated 20 overs.

Despite this being a crucial tie for the visiting side, Kolkata never looked in control from ball one and surrendered to a well-oiled and disciplined Mumbai attack with Lasith Malinga leading the way with impressive figures of three for 35 that included the prize wicket of the dangerous Russell.

For Kolkata, opener Chris Lynn managed to impressed the most with a 29-ball 41 that included four sixes and two boundaries before seamer Hardik Pandya sent him back.

Post Lynn's wicket, Kolkata could not stand up front to Sharma's smart captaincy as he did well by mixing up his bowlers against a vulnerable Kolkata batting line-up.

Off the KKR batting, the No.3 Robin Uthappa struggled the most against the pacers as he failed to connect the ball well and left the dressing room disappointed.

In his 71-minute stay, Uthappa could not accelerate the innings when it was needed and eventually got out in the 19.5 over scoring a 47-ball 40 after coming in the seventh over following the dismissal of Shubman Gill.

MI kept KKR in check from the beginning. They could manage just 37 in the first five overs of power play. It was only in the next over of leg-spinner Rahul Chahar that Lynn managed to clear the boundaries. After that Chahar did not come to bowl in the rest of the innings.

Jasprit Bumrah was as usual and claimed two wickets, while Pandya brothers, too, did their bit. If Krunal choked Kolkata's run, Hardik dismissed the openers.

Malinga demolished all the hopes KKR nursed of a comeback by getting Russell out with a deadly short delivery that kissed his gloves and went into wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock's gloves.
