India were just one wicket away from a famous win against England at the end of the fourth day of third test at Trent Bridge on Tuesday

England were 311 for 9 at stumps on the fourth day after India had set them an improbable target of 521 runs. Jasprit Bumrah took five wickets for the visitors.

Jos Butler and Ben Stokes defied the Indian attack and frustrated India with 169-run stand for the fifth wicket. But a fiery spell by Jasprit Bumrah ended the resistance.

India looked set to wrap the win early after they had reduced England to 64/4 before lunch.

India's seamers bowled with controlled aggression and intelligence and were helped by excellent catching and awful shot-selection from England.

England in trouble before lunch

England resumed their second innings at 23 for no loss but Ishant Sharma soon sent the openers packing.

Keaton Jennings went in the first over, the left-hander poking at a short, rising delivery from Ishant Sharma and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant comfortably snaffled up the chance.

Ishant celebrated the dismissal of Alastair Cook two overs later after the former captain edged it to Lokesh Rahul at second slip.

England badly needed a gritty innings from one of their top order but their biggest hope disappeared when captain Joe Root departed for 13 when his thick edge off Jaspit Bumrah was brilliantly caught by Rahul.

Ollie Pope showed his inexperience with a poor shot, following a wide delivery outside off stump. Virat Kohli took a flying catch at third slip to sent the young batsman back.

It could have been even worse for England but Butler was dropped by Pant off Bumrah at 1.

Butler, Stokes defy India

Having been given that reprieve, Butler showed the kind of patient application that had been sorely missed from the upper order batsmen.

The pair put on 111 runs with Butler on 67 at tea and Stokes progressing to 42. Butler completed his century after tea.

Bumrah strikes back

Bumrah sent back Butler after 169-run stand for the fifth wicket. He then clean bowled Jonny Bairstow, who batted with an injured hand, on the very next ball.

Bumrah got rid of Chris Woakes through an superb bouncer before Hardik Pandya got Ben Stokes out to make it 241/8.

Bumrah soon got Adil Rashid out too, but it was later ruled no-ball for over stepping. Rashid and Stuart Broad added 50 runs for the ninth wicket before Bumrah accounted for Broad to get his fifth wicket.

Die Another Day

Rashid and James Anderson, however, survived the day defying the Indian bowlers for 5.4 overs and adding 19 runs for the last wicket.

That means India will have to come out on Wednesday to claim the last wicket and the victory.

England lead the five-test series 2-0 but the final two matches could now be real battles if, as expected, India finish off the task to pull one game back.
