India vs Australia: Jasprit Bumrah destroys Aussie batting, breaks 39-year-old record

Jasprit Bumrah set a new record in Indian cricket with his fierly performance against Australia in the first innings of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne on Friday. Bumrah, who took 6-33 in the innings, surpassed Dileep Doshi to register most wickets for India in his debut year in Test cricket.

Bumrah who picked up six wickets had set record after he took his first three wickets of Marcus Harris, Shaun Marsh and Travis Head at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). He now has 45 wickets in his debut year.

Dileep Doshi had taken 40 wickets in his debut Test year back in 1979.  Venkatesh Prasad behind Doshi in this list with 37 wickets in 1996 while Narendra Hirwani took 36 wickets in 1988 and Sreesanth took 35 in 2006.

Bumrah has been a go-to bowler for Captain Virat Kohli as he has been in top form since the start of the year in Test cricket.

For his first wicket, Bumrah used the short ball against Harris. However, the Australian opener played quite a poor shot which lead to his dismissal. The last ball before lunch, Bumrah bowled a peach of a delivery to Shaun Marsh to catch him leg before wicket (lbw). Bumrah got Head with a near-perfect yorker just before lunch.

He then bowled Travis Head after lunch beating him with sheer pace.

Michael Clarke on the commentary was in awe of the delivery and said, "He's [Head] done in for pace. He's done for a swing. Bumrah you are a genius."

During the post-lunch show on Sony Sports, Clarke had even said, "He [Bumrah] is my favourite bowler in international cricket right now."

"On the ICC rankings, he might not be the best bowler in the world but I tell you now, he might well be. He's a genius in all three formats," Clarke further said, "Watch this space, in the next 12 months; he will be the No.1 bowler in all three formats in the world."

After resuming on 145 for seven after tea, Australia added just six runs as they lost their last three wickets, with Bumrah dismissing captain Tim Paine for 22, and tail-enders Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood for ducks.
