Tim Paine and Cameron Green had a tough task on their hands as they came in when Australia had lost both Matthew Wade and Marnus Labuschagne in quick succession on day 1. However, the Australia skipper and the young all-rounder showed tremendous application and scored at a confident rate as Australia made smooth progress on day 1. On day 2, both Green and Tim Paine were determined to carry Australia towards a big score. Tim Paine ensured the criticism heading into the Test match did not bother him as he notched up a gritty fifty while Cameron Green was approaching yet another milestone.

However, the 98-run stand was broken in the 100th over of the match as Shardul Thakur produced the breakthrough. Shardul Thakur bowled a full ball outside off and Tim Paine chased at it with hard hands. The outside edge was taken and Rohit Sharma at second slip took his third catch of the match as India finally got the breakthrough. It was redemption for Shardul Thakur as he had dropped Cameron Green on day 1 off his own bowling.

This is the second time that Australia skipper Tim Paine has scored two fifties in a series in his whole career. In the 2010 series in India, Tim Paine scored fifties in Mohali and Bangalore but Australia was still whitewashed 2-0 in that series. In this series, Tim Paine had scored a match-saving 73 in the Adelaide Pink Ball Test that gave Australia some hope.

Australia cross 300

Cameron Green ensured Australia got past 300 but he could not continue as he was bowled by Washington Sundar. The Tamil Nadu off-spinner bowled a straight delivery that skidded on and Cameron Green played down the wrong line to be bowled for 46 as he missed his fifty by three runs. Shardul Thakur continued to have a day of redemption as he took his third wicket by trapping Pat Cummins LBW for 2 as Australia lost three wickets for four runs.

Australia would be hoping that the tailenders drag them to 350 as they look to put up a good total on a wicket that seems to be offering variable bounce and is in danger of further deterioration. The four-match series is level 1-1.
