India's stand-in wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik on Saturday donned the gloves after Parthiv Patel injured his finger on day four of the third Test against South Africa.
Patel went off the field after injuring his right index finger in the final session on the fourth day of the third match. He was substituted by Karthik who has not played a Test since January 2010.
India benefited from the new rule allowing a substitute to keep wickets. The rule that came into effect last October allows a substitute fielder to keep wickets in case of an injury but needs approval from the umpires.
Patel, who is not part of the ODI and T20 squad, will have his x-ray done later today.
Saturday was not a very good day for Patel who remained unsold in the IPL auction today.
India won the third and final Test by 63 runs to pull one back in the three-match series to avert a whitewash in three-match series.
India bundled out the hosts for 177 in their second innings on the fourth day.
South African lost their last eight wickets for 53 runs as India remained unbeaten at Wanderers.
Chasing 241, South Africa were placed comfortably at 124 for two at one stage but their innings folded for 177 following a dramatic collapse.
Pacer Mohammad Shami's five-wicket haul played a crucial role in this big win for India.
