East Delhi MP and former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday backed Delhi and District Cricket Association's (DDCA) decision to rename Feroz Shah Kotla stadium to Arun Jaitley Stadium.

"I am very happy because he deserves this. He gave Delhi a world-class stadium with world-class facilities. It (renaming of stadium) is a good thing but it would have been much better if it was renamed when he was alive. It would have been a perfect gift for him," Gambhir told ANI.

DDCA also confirmed that the renaming of Delhi's famous cricket ground will take place on September 12th at a function where a stand of the ground will also be named after India skipper Virat Kohli's name.

Gambhir on Monday also confirmed that the name of Yamuna Sports Complex in Delhi will be renamed to Arun Jaitley Sports Complex in honour of the late finance minister of India.

Gambhir posted a tweet on his official Twitter handle saying, "May he remain in our hearts forever. As a mark of respect to our beloved leader, I hereby propose to rename Yamuna Sports Complex as Arun Jaitley Sports Complex"

Jaitley was admitted to the AIIMS earlier this month after he complained of restlessness. He was placed under observation at the hospital's Cardio-Neuro-Centre.

Jaitley first became a Cabinet minister in the government of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2000. He then also went on to serve as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha from June 2009.

He was appointed the finance minister in the first term of Modi government in 2014. He opted out of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections citing health reasons.

Jaitley served as the BCCI vice-president and the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) president in the past, sadly passed away on Saturday afternoon last week.
