India's former World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev has thoughts on MS Dhoni's much-awaited return to the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Dev claimed that the tournament is all about the future stars of the sport and MSD needs to play more matches to be considered for India's T20 World Cup squad.

"It's not just Dhoni who is playing the IPL. I am a person who looks for a young player who we can be proud of in the next 10 years. I think Dhoni has already done so much for the country," Kapil said.

"As his fan, yes (would like to see him playing the T20 World Cup) but as a cricketer, I think it all depends on the management. He hasn't played for one year. He should play more matches to be on the team."

"There shouldn't be different parameters for different players. He is on his last leg. I am his fan so I would love to see him but in IPL I am looking for the next generation," he added.

Ever since India's semi-final exit from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 against New Zealand in August, MSD made himself unavailable for selection. During his break from cricket, the 38-year-old also served for the Indian Army too.

Nevertheless, Dhoni is expected to be back in training with the rest of the team on March 1 ahead of the official kick-off of the 13th season of the IPL.

As per the fixture list for IPL 2020, Mumbai Indians will be locking horns with arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the opening day clash of the tournament.

Mumbai and Chennai will face-off on March 29 at the Wankhede Stadium.
