The year 2020 has finally come to an end and it is time for some positivity in 2021. Former Indian cricketers Suresh Raina and Pragyan Ojha wished netizens Happy New Year 2021 as they tweeted their wishes. Manoj Tiwary and Harbhajan Singh, along with the BCCI also extended their wishes to the world as 2021 came in with some hope of positivity amidst a terrible 2020 that saw the coronavirus pandemic stall international cricket and life in an unprecedented manner. For the likes of Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh, the year 2020 was very different and sad to some extent.

Suresh Raina announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020 at the same time as MS Dhoni. His move, combined with the announcement of MS Dhoni, led to tremendous sadness among Indian cricket team fans. However, in IPL 2020, Suresh Raina withdrew from the Chennai Super Kings squad due to the coronavirus outbreak and also because of a family tragedy. Harbhajan Singh, who was also expected to be part of the Chennai Super Kings side for IPL 2020, also pulled off due to family reasons.

Pragyan Ojha had also announced his retirement while Manoj Tiwary also had a positive message for fans in the world.

Unprecedented 2020

The year 2020 was unprecedented for the amount of sporting events that were cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The IPL 2020 was postponed from April to September and was not played in India. The Indian cricket team could not play a single game in front of their home crowds due to the pandemic.

International cricket resumed in July but it was played behind closed doors and in new bio-secure bubbles which limited infections. England hosted West Indies, Pakistan and Australia at home but they did not feature any fans. There were fans present for the games in New Zealand and Australia but in Australia, there was limited attendances as the coronavirus pandemic was brought under control in New Zealand.

International cricket is expected to resume in many countries in 2021 but unless there is no official vaccine, cricket might be played in the ‘new normal’ of the coronavirus pandemic, which will be in bio-secure venues and limited in-person attendance in stadiums.
