Gautam Gambhir said that if that player can play like that he has got more ability than Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and more shots than anyone else.
Former India opener Gautam Gambhir reckoned that Team India batter and Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul has got more ability than his Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore counterparts, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli respectively.
This comes a week ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in which the trio is most likely to form the top three for the Indian team, Gambhir said this after Rahul's swashbuckling knock against the Chennai Super Kings where he alone helped PBKS to chase down 135 runs in just 13 overs with a 98*-run knock off just 42 balls, on Thursday.
Speaking on his innings on ESPN Cricinfo, Gambhir said, "If you can bat like this, why don’t you bat like this? He probably has more ability than Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. I am not saying it just because I have seen KL Rahul doing it today, he just has it. He has got more shots than anyone else in India. And he showed that again.
Rahul put on a majestic display of outstanding clean hitting and an amazing shot-making. After a six off Deepak Chahar, KL Rahul made Josh Hazlewood pay as he hit a couple of boundaries through the line and one over mid-on and he just kept going. A pickup shot off Shardul Thakur, some well-placed shots later of Dwayne Bravo as he was looking like million dollars today. It almost felt like Rahul was batting on a different surface while CSK batted on a different one.
Rahul, who has been criticised for his strike rate and anchor role many times in the past came out all guns blazing and Gambhir suggested that Rahul should play more often like that and let the world know what he can do.
"Just go play, man. Let the world cherish, not only India. Show this world your ability. When people talk about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, they will probably talk about you. Because you have got many more shots compared to anyone else in India.
"Had he played like this, Punjab Kings would’ve qualified by now. It is probably the pressure of captaincy, I don’t know what it is, but the team management can answer," Gambhir further added.
