English weather had the last laugh on the final day of a riveting first Test match between England and India at Trent Bridge as the first match of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 has ended in a draw, giving both teams four points each.
India needed just 157 runs to win the game on the fifth day, with nine wickets in the tank and would have favoured themselves to chase that down if the rain had allowed any play on Day 5. India bowlers, especially Jasprit Bumrah set the game up for the visitors, with a total of nine wickets and a crucial knock of 28 runs with the bat in the game.
Bumrah's spell of 4/46 in the first innings with support from Mohammed Shami's three-wicket haul and Shardul Thakur's two wickets were the mainstay for Team India in bowling England out for 183.
England on the back of skipper Joe Root's 21st Test century were able to get a lead of more than 200 runs in the second innings and present a respectable challenge to the Indian team to chase a score of 209 runs in the final innings on a pitch, on which the ball was seaming and moving throughout.
However, Indian openers were up to the challenge and produced a fine batting display in the final hour where the dark clouds were hovering and the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad were moving the ball country mile. KL Rahul after a few good shots got out to Broad, on a similar delivery in the channel of uncertainty outside the off-stump after scoring 26 runs, following his knock of 84 runs in the first innings.
KL Rahul's 84, Ravindra Jadeja's 56 and crucial contributions from Indian pacers helped India get to 278 and impose themselves in the Test match, but rain marred it all.
