Diana Edulji asks Vinod Rai to follow Board’s new constitution in toto

If Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have been closely following the ongoing war of words between the two Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) members post their controversial TV show, they must be worried about their comeback any sooner.

The sparring between Diana Edulji and Vinod Rai took a new turn on Monday after the former Indian women’s team skipper shot off another letter to Rai questioning his “selective reliance on BCCI’s new constitution”.

And amidst the war or words, perturbed Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) members are contemplating a move for appointment of an ombudsman by calling a special general body (SGM) meeting.

Three days after BCCI legal team, on the directions of Edulji, laid down directives on how to go about the inquiry process that would find whether the duo had breached the Code of Conduct, both COA members are still at the opposite ends on “who will conduct the inquiry”.

Rai, in his mail, had made it clear that if CEO Rahul Johri isn’t carrying out the inquiry, he doesn’t want the COA or yet-to-be-formed Apex Council to be a part of it. He, instead, wants an ad-hoc ombudsman be appointed to oversee the inquiry, once Johri tables his report based on the replies from the two cricketers.

However, Edulji objected to Johri carrying out the inquiry because of his alleged involvement in a sexual harassment case and also how he was handed a clean chit by a panel, which many claimed was hand-picked by Rai, in controversial circumstances recently.

However, Rai believes the COA has the power to appoint an ad-hoc ombudsman.

Rai has listed that if the Apex Council and a full-time ombudsman has to be appointed, the process may take longer and thus, Team India would suffer given there is a World Cup coming up.

As far as Edulji is concerned, she reminded Rai how he took some of the decisions related to Johri and the appointment of women’s coach without following the same new BCCI constitution, which he is batting for.

In her latest letter, Edulji wrote, “My point of having a legal view in players matter was only to take an informed and a correct decision. As there is no provision for appointment of an ad-hoc ombudsman as per the new Constitution, we cannot go ahead with that.

“As the SC hearing is scheduled for January 17, let the court be informed about this situation and let an Ombudsman be appointed by the court instead of taking a wrong step of appointing the ad-hoc ombudsman, which is not as per the new constitution,” her letter added.

Having witnessed the war between the COA members, the old guards of the BCCI are finding an opportunity to call for an SGM to appoint the ombudsman to conduct the inquiry, as per the new constitution. Because COA, in the past, had always rejected any such move by members terming it unconstitutional.

Pandya, Rahul apologise

Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul on Monday tendered “unconditional” apologies for their comments during a TV chat show amid COA chief Vinod Rai saying that the BCCI should correct the two players, not end their careers.
