It’s raining resignations in Delhi cricket these days.

Virender Sehwag, along with his colleagues in the Cricket Committee Aakash Chopra and Rahul Sanghvi, put in their papers on Monday. They were unhappy that their recommendation to appoint former India speedster Manoj Prabhakar as Delhi’s bowling coach was vetoed by the management of Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA).

The development is being seen new chapter in the battle between Delhi’s two most prolific Delhi batsmen — Sehwag and current skipper Gautam Gambhir. The latter has chosen to come out in public and explain why he opposed Prabhakar’s presence in the dressing room.

After the committee members resigned on Monday, Gambhir tweeted, “It’s being said my protest against Manoj Prabhakar’s appointment as Delhi bowling coach has led to DDCA Cricket Committee’s resignation. Yes, I’ve always adopted zero tolerance when it comes to cricketers alleged of corruption but the real reason for their resignation as told to me by Powers that be was that post adoption of Lodha reforms on September 20th, (the) Cricket Committee will be disbanded.”

Gambhir has maintained the stand that anyone with a tainted past should be kept away from the team dressing room. He had also protested when Prabhakar was made coach in 2007-08 season. A similar situation also arose in 2016 when Gambhir protested against the appointment of former batsman Ajay Jadeja as coach of Delhi team.

“In both cases (2007-8 & 2016) whether it was against Prabhakar or Jadeja, Gambhir as a skipper had put his foot down. He has not allowed ‘any alleged match-fixers’ in the dressing room of which he is a part,” a source close to Gambhir told DNA.

Conflict of interest

Sehwag and other committee members have claimed that they are resigning “keeping the best interest of cricket in mind”.

Incidentally, as Justice Lodha panel recommendations are to be implemented by DDCA before September 20, there is no way the Cricket Committee members with conflict of interest can continue to run Delhi cricket.

Sehwag has a cricket academy and is also an expert on a news channel, owned by the newly-elected DDCA president Rajat Sharma. Sanghvi, on the other hand, is associated with IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, while Chopra is an expert on various news channels.

Though, Gambhir also has conflict of interest as he was appointed government nominee in DDCA by Sports ministry last year, the player has, according to source, told DDCA top officials that he has no intention to take up this role”.

“He has kept his resignation ready. Gautam is a player and till the time he is playing, he has no intention to take up any other role in Delhi cricket,” the source added.
