Steyn, who is returning to cricket after recovering from a heel injury in January, dismissed last man Lakshan Sandakan to claim his 421st wicket.

Sandakan was caught at point by Temba Bauvma as Sri Lanka were all out for 190 runs in their  second innings. Steyn took wickets from the match.

Steyn took 21 Tests less than Pollock, who ended with 421 wickets after 108 Tests, to reach the landmark.

Considered one of the all-time great pace bowlers, Steyn debuted for South Africa 14 years ago and he is playing his 87th Test match.
