Andre Russel was on fire as he guided Jamaica Tallawahs to a historic victory against Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the 2018 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) on Saturday. The West Indies all-rounder, in his first match as captain, smashed an unbeaten 121 from 49 deliveries to help his team register the highest successful chase in the T20 tournament's history. Not just that, Russell also took a hat-trick earlier in the match at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain.

TKR made a massive 223 for 6 from 20 overs after being asked to bat first. A quick-fire 46 from opener Chris Lynn and half-centuries from Colin Munro and Brendon McCullum helped TKR post what seemed like a match-winning total. Russel took a hat-trick from the last three balls of the innings, removing McCullum, Darren Bravo and Denesh Ramdin.

Russel then came into bat at No.7 for Tallawahs, with his team tottering at 41 for 5. The right-hander was dropped off the first ball he faced but then went on to unleash a stunning six-hitting spree to take his side through. The 30-year-old smashed 13 maximums and six boundaries in his jaw-dropping knock. TKR owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was also present at the venue and seemed to enjoy Russell's knock even as his side headed towards defeat.

Russell became just the second player in T20 cricket history to take a hat-trick and score a hundred in the same match. His innings was also the fastest ever hundred in the CPL, and it helped his team register the highest successful chase in the tournament's history. Middle-order batsman Kennar Lewis' 51 off 35 was the only other significant performance with the bat for the Tallawahs.

Here are highlights

Russell was, of course, declared the Man of the Match and his happiness had no bounds. "First game as a captain at this level, definitely it's a good start. I am gonna enjoy this till it lasts. The hard work has been paying off. I'm happy that I can contribute to the team. Happy for the boys. I don't have a problem batting at 7. We have a dinosaur tail. I get the job done there, so I am happy," he said.

TKR skipper Dwayne Bravo was all praise for his compatriot. "First of all, well played to him and congrats on winning the first game as a captain. Not much we can do, very happy for him personally. He proved why he's the best in the world at the moment. I hope he stays fit and healthy. Yes, we ended on the losing side, but I'm happy. We were beaten by some brilliant individual batting performance by Andre and well backed up by Kennar," he said.
