Jasprit Bumrah had a quiet game in the Sydney Test but his absence will be a huge blow to the Indian cricket team in the deciding Test at the Gabba.
The Indian cricket team's injury woes have worsened with Jasprit Bumrah, their pace spearhead, being ruled out of the Brisbane Test due to an abdominal strain he suffered in the Sydney Test against the Australian cricket team which ended in an epic draw. According to a report in PTI, Jasprit Bumrah sustained the injury during the fourth day of the Sydney Test and scans revealed an abdominal strain. A senior BCCI official told PTI that Jasprit Bumrah suffered an abdominal strain while fielding in Sydney but he is expected to be fit for the England series. This is a massive blow to the Indian cricket team after they drew the Sydney Test in heroic circumstances. This means that Shardul Thakur and T Natarajan might make their debuts in the Brisbane Test.
The latest injury update already has piled on the injury woes for the Indian cricket team. Ishant Sharma was ruled out before the series while Mohammed Shami also had to withdraw from the series after he was hit on the arm by a Pat Cummins bouncer in the Adelaide Test. Umesh Yadav also suffered a hamstring injury and was ruled out of the Sydney and Brisbane Tests. Ravindra Jadeja suffered a dislocation on his left thumb after being hit on the arm by a bouncer from Mitchell Starc. Hanuma Vihari has suffered a grade 2 hamstring tear and that could see him miss the Brisbane Test as well as the England series beginning in February 5. There are also questions on Ravichandran Ashwin's fitness while Rishabh Pant had to take painkillers for the blow that he suffered on his elbow while trying to pull a short ball from Pat Cummins. According to other media reports, Mayank Agarwal is also in doubt for the fourth Test as he has been hit on the hand in practice in Sydney and has been sent for scans.
India's problems in Brisbane
Having batted heroically in the Sydney Test, India now face a problem of fielding an entirely new bowling line-up for the Brisbane Test. Mohammed Siraj will lead the attack while Navdeep Saini or Shardul Thakur will share the new ball with them. T Natarajan will be the second change bowler while only Ravichandran Ashwin will be the spinner with plenty of experience in the Indian cricket team. With Ravindra Jadeja now out, the Indian cricket team could see Mayank Agarwal back in the team. The Indian cricket team could explore an option of playing both Rishabh Pant and Wriddhiman Saha, with Pant playing only as a batsman.
The Indian cricket team have never won in Brisbane while Australia have not lost a Test at the Gabba for the last 32 years. The four-match series is level 1-1 and a win for Australia will help them retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after six years.
