Sourav Ganguly, the head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, appeared in many advertisement during the IPL 2020 in which he endorsed the My11 Circle Fantasy Gaming app. This was seen by many as a ‘conflict of interest’ situation as Dream 11 is the official sponsor of the BCCI. With the BCCI now conducting it’s 89th Annual General Meeting on Thursday in Ahmedabad, there are reports stating that Sourav Ganguly’s brand endorsements could be an issue. However, according to a report in Hindustan Times, the issue of Sourav Ganguly endorsing brands might raise too many questions. Legally, Sourav Ganguly has faced no objections from BCCI’s sponsors. However, the report has said that in case the issue is raised in the BCCI AGM, Sourav Ganguly has a “line of defence ready”, according to one Board official who is close to Sourav Ganguly.

In an interview to PTI, Dream 11 co-founder Harsh Jain said that this issue was an internal matter for the BCCI. In another development, JSW Steel, which co-owns the Delhi Capitals franchise, had also fallen prey to ‘conflict of interest’ with Sourav Ganguly apparently part of the JSW Board as well as the mentor for the Delhi Capitals. However, that is not the case as Sourav Ganguly is no longer part of the company board after taking over the BCCI presidency.

Appointments for chairman of selectors and IPL GC player’s representative

The BCCI AGM will see Rajeev Shukla return as the BCCI vice-president while Brajesh Patel will continue to the chairman of the IPL Governing Council. Pragyan Ojha, the former India left-arm spinner, has already replaced Surinder Khanna as the player’s representative in the IPL Governing Council.

However, another major development could be the appointment of a new chairman of selectors. The committee, which is currently headed by Sunil Joshi, might make way for Ajit Agarkar, the former India pacer who has taken 288 ODI wickets. Madan Lal, who heads the Cricket Advisory Committeee (CAC) will conduct the interviews.

There are three vacancies which will open up by the end of the year from the zonal selection panel. Harvinder Singh represents Central Zone and there will be other players in contention like former seamer Abey Kuruvilla, who has applied from West. From the North Zone, Chetan Sharma and Maninder Singh are the candidates while East Zone has three candidates in Shiv Sunder Das, Debashish Mohanty and Ranadeb Bose.

Jatin Paranjpe (West), Devang Gandhi (East) and Sarandeep Singh (North) have completed their terms. This new selection panel will have their first major task when they pick the team for the four-Test series against England beginning in February 2021.
