With new constitution in place, Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) chief Vinod Rai is now gearing up to conduct the much-awaited BCCI elections within a span of next three months.

Clearing all air over his future involvement in the affairs of Board, Rai has made in has made it clear that "COA will step away and hand over powers to the new office-bearers once they come into the power".

"We would exit the day the new set of office-bearers take over. We were given a mandate and don't wish to overstay," said Rai, adding: "In normal circumstances, we are looking at elections in about 90 days. The compliance report needs to be giving within four weeks from the date of registration. We have set the date as September 20."

When asked about the queries being raised by various state cricket associations whether they have to just follow the BCCI constitution or there is any scope for alterations since they are registered under trust, societies act or company act?

Rai was categorical in his views. "The constitution is binding on the state associations. The state association constitution should mirror the BCCI one."
Role for players

Despite facing few controversies where chief coach Anil Kumble unceremoniously exited the Team India dressing room and Ravi Shastri forced his own coaching staff discarding suggestions of having Rahul Dravid or Zaheer Khan as his deputies, Rai and his colleague Diana Edulji feel that former players have bigger role to play in the future.

"With new constitution in place, the voice of former players will be heard in BCCI as well as in states. Two players will have a place in the Apex Council. We need former players to come into administration because their experience can count a lot. The BCCI is so rich because of the performance of the 11 players on the field. So they should have a voice," said Rai.

In response to confusion in some cricket associations on the tenure of officials, whether nine years in state and nine years in BCCI or a combined term of nine years in both, Rai left it to the Apex court. "Some state units have approached the SC on this issue. It is best for the SC to clarify," was all Rai said.
