BBL 2018-19: D'Arcy Short, James Faulkner help Hurricanes kick-start campaign with win, beat Heat by 15 runs

D'Arcy Short's 52-ball 67  and James Faulkner's 3 for 25 helped Hobart Hurricanes to kick-start their Big Bash League (BBL) 2018-19 campaign with a win as they defeated Brisbane Heat by 15 runs on Saturday

Due to the rain, the match was reduced to 19 overs per side and batting first, Matthew Wade-led Hurricanes posted a total of 159 for 6 at the  Carrara Oval, Queensland.

After Short, no other batsman even touched 30 and Ben McDermott was the next best batsman, who scored a quick-fire 25 off 16 balls before getting runout. 

In response to Hurricanes' target of 160 in 19 overs, Heat had a terrible start as they lost their opener, Brendon McCullum, in the very second over. The former BlackCaps skipper got run out and had to walk back with a score of four runs at run-a-ball. 

Even in Heat's opening match, which was against Adelaide Strikers, McCullum managed four runs. He had smashed a boundary in the first ball of the day before throwing away his wicket the very next delivery. 

All-rounder Ben Cutting scored a fighting 58 off 32 balls before Jofra Archer got him caught near long-off. His knock was inclusive of five sixes and two boundaries and had he stayed on, the result could have gone the other way too. 

This defeat would hurt the Heats more than the previous one because they were in a winning position on Saturday before they suffered a batting collapse. 

Hurricanes next face Glenn Maxwell's Melbourne Stars on Monday. Meanwhile, Heat, who have already played two games this season, now would get back to action only next year with their New Year fixture against Sydney Sixers on January 1.
