Veteran Kiwi cricketer Ross Taylor scripted history when he becomes New Zealand’s highest run-scorer in Test cricket.
The 35-year-old played his 99th Test and overhauled the tally of 7,172 of Stephen Fleming, who had managed it in 111 matches between 1994 and 2008.
However, Taylor was absolutely emotional when he finally accomplished this long-awaited feat.
"My goal was to play one Test match. I guess it's an emotional time because my mentor Martin Crowe.. one of the goals he put down for me was to be New Zealand's highest test run-scorer. To be honest, I didn't believe him, but I'd have loved for him to be here and help celebrate," Taylor told reporters.
"When I first played for New Zealand I'd had a pretty decent one-day career and only scored three or four first-class hundreds and Twenty20 was just coming through."
"I always thought I was good enough to play one-day cricket, but Test cricket was something I was never quite sure if I was good enough. That's why I'd seek Martin's help to become a better player than the raw, gay abandon player that I was as a youngster," he added.
After breaking that record, Taylor also indicated he hoped to play for at least a couple more years. "I definitely don't have an end date," he said.
"As everyone tells me you're a long-time retired and you'll know when the best time is to retire. I just take it a couple of months at a time. I don't look too far ahead, but all going well I've hopefully got a couple of years left with the New Zealand team."
