Ajinkya Rahane’s Indian cricket team produced a remarkable performance to win the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne against Australia by eight wickets. The win was even more remarkable considering that the Indian cricket team were shot out for 36 in Adelaide and had arrived for the Test in Melbourne low on confidence and missing key players like Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami. Ajinkya Rahane’s proactive captaincy, combined with his brilliant 100 and partnerships with the middle order helped India bury the ghosts of Adelaide in grand style. For all his efforts, Ajinkya Rahane was named the Player of the Match. However, this Boxing Day Test saw Ajinkya Rahane also become the first player to get a unique medal.

When he won the Man of the Match award, Ajinkya Rahane was awarded the Mullagh Medal. What is the Mullagh Medal? The medal is named after Johnny Mullagh, the first aboriginal cricketer to have been inducted into the Australian cricket Hall of Fame. Johnny Mullagh was part of the 1868 Aboriginal team that became the country's first sporting team to tour internationally. Peter King, the chairman of the Australian cricket team Hall of Fame section, said Johnny Mullagh and the 1868 Aboriginal team paved the way for so many future Australians to showcase their skill and talent on the world stage.

Johnny Mullagh was among 13 Aboriginal men picked to form a team who were brought to London in 1868 by a former first-class cricketer, Charles Lawrence. Mullagh played in 45 of the 47 matches on the 1868 England tour, scoring 1,698 runs at an average of 23.65 and taking 245 wickets at 10.

Rahane the star

Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy, combined with Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant bowling and Ravichandran Ashwin’s guile, helped India win the Test in grand style. This was Ajinkya Rahane’s third win as captain and it was India’s second consecutive win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, having won in 2018.

Following the win, Ajinkya Rahane said, “The talk was all about showing the attitude and intent on the field. As I said, character. Adelaide was about one hour that took the game away from us. Lots to learn for even now.”
