While fans were still trying to recover from Virat Kohli's announcement of stepping down as the T20 captain of Team India, he gave another shocker as he announced that he will also step down as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

"To the whole RCB family, the amazing fans of Bangalore and to everyone, who has been a supporter of RCB for so many years, I had an announcement to make. Spoken to the squad this evening, before the second leg of the tournament starts, to inform everyone that this is going to be my last leg in the IPL as the captain of RCB.

"Spoke to the management this evening, [it] was something on my mind for a while. As I recently announced stepping down from [India's] T20 captaincy as well to manage my workload, which has been immense over the last so many years and I want to be able to continue to be committed to the responsibilities I am fulfilling and I felt, I needed this space to refresh, to regroup and be absolutely clear in how I want to move forward," Kohli added.

The batsman has led RCB in 132 games out of 199 he has played in the IPL and the side has won 60 games while losing 65 of them.

However, it is the trophy that he has not won either with Team India or RCB which somehow now gets him to join some of the legendary players who were the very best cricketers but could not be called good captains.

1. Daniel Vettori

Virat Kohli was appointed as RCB skipper in 2013 in place of Daniel Vettori. The New Zealand cricketer is also one of the best left-handed spinners to play the game. Vettori is one of the few cricketers to do the double of 3000 runs and 300 wickets in Test cricket.

However, when it came to leading his country, Vettori leadership abilities went under the scanner. He had only managed to secure six wins from 32 Test matches with 16 draws in comparison to an almost 50 per cent success rate in the ODIs.

2. Sachin Tendulkar

Literally the 'God of cricket', even Sachin Tendulkar had his share of downfall. He was the greatest batsman to ever play the modern game and even almost holds every batting record.

However, the batsman lacked consistency when it came to captaincy. He served India as a skipper in two spells first in 1996 and then in 1999-2000. He managed to secure only four wins from 25 Tests and 23 victories from 73 ODIs.

He was also offered by BCCI to take up the duties as Rahul Dravid resigned from the post, but the legendary batsman denied which opened the gates for MS Dhoni.

3. Brian Lara

Known to be Sachin Tendulkar's rival, Brian Lara was arguably the best left-hand batsman of his generation. Lara has over 20000 runs in his international career with the highest score of 400 in an innings of a Test match.

However, when it came to captaincy, the West Indies cricketer failed to convert his success. With a 50% win percentage from 125 ODls, it was his rate in the Test format which came under the scanner. Lara had managed to win only ten games out of 47 matches and lost 26.

4. Chris Gayle

Another West Indian player who is still very active in the game is Chris Gayle. The explosive batsman had succeeded Brian Lara as the leader of his country.

However, the attacking side of his batting lacked while leading the Windies. With just 17 wins from 53 games and 30 defeats, Gayle was the perfect example of some great cricketers who failed to take their side to the top as a captain.

5. Rahul Dravid

Another Indian who was considered as the best Test player and even the 'Wall', Rahul Dravid had become one of India's finest Test batsmen. He has over 24000 international runs to his name including 48 centuries and 146 fifties across formats.

However, Dravid, when he became the captain, was unable to replicate his performance. He took over the captaincy from Ganguly in late 2005. Dravid captained India in a total of 25 Tests, and 79 ODIs, winning just eight and 42, respectively.
