IPL 2021 auction: Sreesanth, Arjun Tendulkar included in list, Joe Root and Mitchell Starc opt-out - Know about others

The IPL's players list incorporates a total of 1097 players (814 Indian and 283 overseas players).

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 Auction is all set to take place in Chennai on 18th February and will begin from 3 PM onwards. The IPL's player's list incorporates a total of 1097 players (814 Indian and 283 overseas players) - 207 capped, 863 uncapped and 27 Associate players.

Out of the 283 overseas players registered the maximum was from West Indies with 56, followed by 42 from Australia. There were also 38 from South Africa, 31 from Sri Lanka, 29 from New Zealand and 21 from England.

There are 9 from UAE, 8 from Nepal, 7 from Scotland, 5 from Bangladesh and 2 each from Ireland, USA, Zimbabwe and a lone player from the Netherlands rounded off the list.

So lets have a look at the players who have decided to register while who have decided to opt-out.

Mitchell Starc will not be part of IPL 2021, as the left-arm fast bowler has not registered for the auctions. He last featured in the IPL in 2015, for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), after his inaugural season the year before. Starc had been a standout after he had taken 20 wickets in 13 games at an average of 14.55 and an economy rate of 6.76.

 

Not just Starc, but England captain Joe Root - who scored a century in his 100th Test - also did not register for the second IPL in a row. Other England players who previously featured in the competition, namely Harry Gurney and Tom Banton also have not registered, ESPN Cricinfo reported. 

 

James Pattinson, who was part of the Mumbai Indians' (MI) title-winning squad in 2020, also opted out.

Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan and India's S Sreesanth will both be a part of the auctions this year. The two served out their suspensions or bans earlier. 

 

While Shakib is one of 11 players to be listed at the highest base price of INR 2 crore (approx. US $274,000), Sreesanth has set his base price at INR 75 lakh (approx. US $103,000).

Many players who have been released from franchises are in the list and some have set their base price at INR 2 crore, namely Kedar Jadhav, Harbhajan Singh, Glenn Maxwell, Steven Smith, Moeen Ali, Sam Billings, Liam Plunkett, Jason Roy, Mark Wood and Colin Ingram.

Players who have set their base price at INR 1.5 crore (approx. US $206,000) are Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Alex Carey, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jhye Richardson, Mitchell Swepson, Tom Curran, Lewis Gregory, Alex Hales, Adam Lyth, Adil Rashid and David Willey.

 

World's top-ranked T20I batsman, Dawid Malan, who is yet to feature in the IPL, has also set his base price at INR 1.5 crore.

 

5. Players who have set 1 crore as base price

Players who have set INR 1 crore (approx. US $137,000) as their base price are Aaron Finch, Umesh Yadav, Hanuma Vihari, Marnus Labuschagne and Sheldon Cottrell.

Other capped Indian players who have registered are Cheteshwar Pujara, Karun Nair, Shivam Dube and Varun Aaron, all at INR 50 lakh (approx. US $68,600). 

 

Apart from them, Arjun Tendulkar, who played two matches for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021, has also registered at a base price of INR 20 lakh (approx. US $27,400).

7. Youngest player to register

Afghanistan's Noor Ahmad Lakanwal - a 16-year-old left-arm spinner - is the youngest player to register. He has his price at INR 20 lakh (approx. US $27,447). 

 

8. Oldest players in the auction

A left-arm spinner like his father Dilip, Nayan Doshi, is the oldest in the auction, aged 42. Doshi had played four matches across IPL 2010 and 2011 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR), respectively.

 

The other two players aged 40-plus who have registered for the auctions are S Santhamoorthy, a Pondicherry medium-pacer who took 5 for 20 against Mumbai in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is 41, while Harbhajan is 40 years old.
