R Ashwin getting Jos Buttler out the 'Mankad' way has caused a lot of controversy.
IPL 2019: Kings XI Punjab beat Rajasthan Royals by 14 runs in Jaipur on Monday. However, the biggest talking point of the match was a dismissal that may have changed the course of the game.
Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler on Monday became the first victim of 'Mankading' in the history of the Indian Premier League when a desperate Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed the batsman in a controversial manner during their IPL match.
With Buttler going strong at 69 off 43 balls while chasing 185 runs, Ashwin mankaded the Rajasthan Royals opener without giving him any warning.
The game still seemed much in favour of Rajasthan as Steve Smith and Samson kept ticking the scoreboard before Smith (20) gave a simple catch to KL Rahul. The tide turned soon after Samson's dismissal for 30 and Rajasthan faced lusty blows and unfortunately ended their chase on 170 for the loss of nine.
While it was within the rules, the wicket of Buttler created a big controversy with cricketers, experts and fan making their feelings known about the dismissal.
Shane Warne, Rajasthan's brand ambassador slammed it as 'low and disgraceful act'.
However, this is not the first time Jos Buttler has been Mankaded.
1. Buttler 'mankaded' by Ashwin- What exactly happened
R Ashwin mankaded Buttler in controversial circumstances in the 13th over with Rajasthan scoreboard reading 108 for two.
At that stage Buttler was going strong at 69 off 43 balls. The dismissal is sure to raise fresh debate over the spirit of the game as Ashwin didn't give the Englishman a prior warning. It also seemed Ashwin stopped in his bowling action and waited for Buttler to go out of the crease before taking the bails off.

As expected Buttler seemed furious and had a heated exchange with Ashwin before leaving the field after the third umpire ruled him out.

2. Here is what the rule says
"41.16 Non-striker leaving his/her ground early
If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out. Whether the attempt is successful or not, the ball shall not count as one in the over.
If the bowler fails in an attempt to run out the non-striker, the umpire shall call and signal Dead ball as soon as possible."

3. What Ashwin said about the incident
R Ashwin said that his decision run out Buttler was not planned.
“No real argument to that (Mankading incident) and it’s pretty instinctive,” Ashwin said during the post-match presentation ceremony.
“I actually didn’t load and he left the crease. That’s always been my take on it because it’s my half of the crease. I was not even at the crease, he wasn’t even looking at me and he just left the place.”

4. Many call it against spirit of the game
Twitter was soon flooded with reactions over the wicket. Many cricketers, present and former, took to Twitter to express their thought over the wicket.
I can’t believe what I’m seeing!! @IPL Terrible example to set for young kids coming through. In time I think Ashwin will regret that.

It’s within the laws of the game but Jos Butler should have been warned by Ashwin before that. Very Surprised ! Remember Ashwin doing the same in an international game where Sehwag withdrew the appeal.

Very very poor wasn’t it

5. Ashwin also gets support
However, there were some who came out in support of Ashwin too.
Law is above The Mythical Spirit of The Game. Don’t fret. Don’t frown. #Ashwin #Buttler #RRvKXIP #IPL

Am not worried whether ur a fan or cease to be one but there is a rule it's followed by all.. Leaving the crease is not done, spirit of cricket or no cricket https://t.co/qcxW94CUo8

Buttler was ‘Mankaded’ or ‘Browned’. Either way, it’s in the rules so Ashwin-slammers should hold their whip.

6. Fans divided
Many fans also took a shot at Ashwin for going against the spirit of the game.
@ashwinravi99 Disgraceful. You have lost all the respect. #RRvsKXIP #ashwin

Some called it a 'smart' move by R Ashwin.

Proud to be fan of smart cricketer like you @ashwinravi99 .
Well done
People don't come out to criticize the rules of cricket when a batsman is adjudicated not out if the ball touches the stumps but the bails don't fall even if it is sheer luck. But when a bowler does some smart work you criticize the bowler in the name of disgraceful act. #Ashwin

7. When Ashwin did a Mankad and Sehwag called the batsman back
Back in 2012, Ashwin has done something similar to Sri Lanka's Thirimanne in Brisbane. However, India's stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag decided to withdraw the run-out appeal. Sachin Tendulkar was present and he had asked Sehwag to withdraw the appeal.

8. What is 'Mankading' or 'Browning'?
Former India batsman Vinoo Mankad was the first cricketer to execute this kind of dismissal. In 1947-48, during India's tour to Australia, Mankad ran out Bill Brown in the second Test. He broke the wicket at the non-striker's end during his run-up while Brown was out of his ground. The incident angered the Australian media and they named this type of dismissals as 'Mankading'.
