Despite wearing a helmet, it did not help much as the ball struck an unprotected area just below his left ear.
Hughes sustained brain haemorrhage and died two days later without regaining consciousness
Today commemorates the fifth-year anniversary of his death and Cricket Australia took to Twitter to pay tribute to the batsman.
Seeing this, Twitterati too poured in their love and wishes for Phillip Hughes as said 'Forever #63notout'.
