The second Twenty20 International between New Zealand and West Indies at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui saw history being created on Sunday as New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips smashed a century off just 46 balls to help his side reach a mammoth 238/3. Phillips became the fourth New Zealand player after Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill and Colin Munro to hit a century in the shortest format but his 46-ball ton made him the fastest New Zealand player to hit a century in Twenty20 Internationals. It was a delight for the fans at the Bay Oval as they witnessed a dazzling exhibition of batting from Phillips.

Glenn Phillips came to bat when New Zealand had already reached 57/2 in seven overs but the pitch was pretty slow and batting was difficult. Martin Guptill looked in good touch but he fell for 34 and New Zealand had some rebuilding to do. Glenn Phillips got going with a boundary but he showed his intent by hammering Kieron Pollard for his first six. In the 11th over bowled by Keemo Paul, Phillips smashed a six and two fours.

However, in the 13th over, Glenn Phillips blasted three sixes and a four off Fabian Allen as he reached his fifty off just 22 balls. Following a short 20-minute rain break, Glenn Phillips raised the tempo by hammering another six. The batsman was given great support by Devon Conway and he too joined in on the action, smashing boundaries. In the 17th over, Phillips smashed three fours and a six off Sheldon Cottrell as he moved closer to his century.

Conway hit his maiden fifty off just 21 balls with two fours and two sixes off Keemo Paul as the bowler ended with woeful figures of 4-0-64-0, the most expensive figures by a West Indies bowler. Phillips notched up his century off just 45 balls, breaking the record held by Colin Munro who smashed 100 off 46 balls also against West Indies. But in the final over, he suffered a recurrence of a knee injury which he sustained in Auckland and he departed for 108 off 51 balls to help New Zealand end on 238/3. The knock included 10 fours and eight sixes and his partnership with Devon Conway was worth 184 runs.

Great prospect

Glenn Phillips was born in South Africa but he chose to ply his trade for New Zealand. Phillips made his List A debut on 24 January 2015 in the Ford Trophy. Phillips made his Twenty20 debut on 4 December 2016 in the 2016–17 Super Smash against the Otago Volts, making 55 off 32 deliveries opening the batting. He was the highest run-scorer in the Super Smash, with 369 runs. He scored his first century (116 not out) in the final regular season match against Central Districts where the Stags won by Duckworth-Lewis. He became the second domestic player since Hamish Marshall to score centuries in all three forms of the game, with Phillips being the first to do so within a single domestic season.

After a solid domestic show, Glenn Phillips made his international debut against South Africa in 2017. Before this match, Phillips had played one Test and 12 T20Is with one fifty that was also hit against the West Indies in Nelson in 2017. With this knock, a new star has emerged on the horizon for New Zealand.
