Virat Kohli has been declared as the winner of the ICC Men’s Player of the Decade award in a poll that was conducted by DNA India on Wednesday. Virat Kohli is the only player to be nominated in five categories of the ICC Awards for the Decade which was announced recently. An overwhelming 65.5 percent voted that Virat Kohli should be the winner of the ICC Men’s Player of the Decade award while 19.7 percent voted for the Spirit of the Cricket Award. When it came to the ICC Men’s T20I Player of the Decade and ICC Men’s Test player of the Decade, the response was low.

There are seven categories of awards and they are Men's Player of the Decade, Women's ODI Player of the Decade, Women's Player of the Decade, Men's ODI Player of the Decade, Men’s Test Player of the Decade, Men's T20I Player of the Decade and the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade. Virat Kohli faces stiff competition from Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni as the ICC Men's ODI player of the decade while on the Spirit of the Cricket front, he may struggle to match up to the grace and humility New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson showed in the aftermath of the cataclysmic World Cup 2019 in which New Zealand lost the trophy due to a superior boundary count after the normal match and Super Over were tied.

Kohli greatest in the decade

When it comes to batsmanship in the decade of 2010-2019, Virat Kohli has redefined the essence of batting. In ODIs, he is just 133 runs away from becoming the fastest to 12000 runs and breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record. In fact, Virat Kohli is on the cusp of breaking several of Sachin Tendulkar’s records. He is just a few centuries away from matching Tendulkar’s tally of 51 ODI centuries.

Virat Kohli is the only player in the whole decade to score 20,000 runs combined in all formats of the game. Virat Kohli is also the only player to average 50 or more in all formats of cricket.

However, it is his batting while chasing a big total in ODIs that has changed cricket completely. The bigger the total, the better Kohli bats. Virat Kohli has scored many centuries while chasing and India has lost only very few times whenever Kohli scores a century. Thus, in every sense of the word, Kohli is a true match-winner.
