The doors maybe soon closing for both Rohit and Ishant Sharma of their hopes for playing the test series against Australia starting December 17.

A report by Mumbai Mirror suggests that it could be the end of the road for both of them as they will not be able to recover in time for the four-match series.

The duo has been undergoing their rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) but their recoveries are taking time and reports have not been encouraging.

With the head coach Ravi Shastri already expressing his doubts over the duo's recovery in time taking into account all the quarantine regulations, it will be a big blow for team India. Ishant's absence will especially hurt as he has made a potent bowling comination with Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah in the last three years and has had a considerable success.

With the reports of their absence most likely holding true, the team India management has started considering possible replacement options. Mumbai batsman and Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer could be asked to stay back if the need arises.

“There won’t be any fresh player coming in after Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma’s arrival. The selectors picked a jumbo squad for this reason. If the need arises, Shreyas could be asked to stay back,” a BCCI source was quoted as speaking to the Times of India.

“As of now, the white-ball players are supposed to fly back before the Test series but there’s one change in the plans," the source added.

As for the bowlers, team India aready had flown in pacers Ishan Porel and Kartik Tyagi to travel with the team for practice and emergencies like these.

With Virat already being not in there for the last three tests, and now Rohit going amiss, India's batting resources will take a hit and will put pressure on the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill, who are still new in this format.
