The ICC has announced the dates for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 qualifiers and all the series that were impacted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The ICC has announced the qualifying pathway for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup with the announcement of the date of the ICC Cricket World Cup qualifiers. Apart from this, the Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 ODIs. There will be 96 ODIs played across the 14 series that are scheduled to be played in 2021 and 2022 respectively and the remaining two in early 2023. The International Cricket Council has released a comprehensive plan and has included an Olympic system where the bottom teams get another chance. The repechage will be in place for the global qualifying events as the roadmap for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 was unveiled.
In addition to the ICC Cricket World Cup qualifiers and the Cricket World Cup League 2 ODI series, there will also be a Challenger A and Challenger B Leagues which will compete for a chance in the World Cup. After the 21 tri-series in League 2 have been completed the top three teams will confirm their place in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023. The bottom four teams will drop into the Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-Off 2023 – which is a repechage event to the Global Qualifier. These teams will be joined by the winner of Challenge League A and B. The top two teams from the Play-Off.
The two leagues will run simultaneously with the Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League which started in July 2020. Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 hosts India and the other top nations have qualified automatically for the pinnacle event. The bottom five teams from the Super League will play in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, joining the best three teams from League 2.
More associate nations cricket
The entire qualification cycle will begin from March 2021 with the ICC CWC League 2 matches that are involving Oman, USA and Nepal. It will end with the ICC Cricket World Cup qualifier in Zimbabwe where the top two teams will qualify for the World Cup which will be held in India. In the previous edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup qualifiers, they were also held in Zimbabwe and the hosts crashed out in dramatic circumstances as their dreams were dashed.
Chris Tetley, ICC head of events stated that the cricket apex body wanted to give the maximum chances to the teams to qualify. “When we rescheduled the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 to October and November 2023 it enabled us to extend the window for qualification events to take place and thereby ensure we maximise the opportunity for qualification to be decided on the field of play,” Tetley said.
