New Zealand Cricket team have been dealt with a dual blow even before the test series against the West Indies started.
All-rounder Colin de Grandhomme has been ruled out of the two-match series after suffering a bone bruising in his right foot.
Expressing his disappointment over De Grandhomme missing out on the series, New Zealand coach Gary Stead said, "It’s disappointing for Colin to be ruled out of the Tests completely and he’ll now target being fit and available for the Boxing Day Test [against Pakistan] at Bay Oval."
The 29-year old all-rounder, who has played just one test has been added to the squad as his replacement. Mitchell made his test debut against England at home last year.

Left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel's chances of participating in the two-match series also look bleak as he is recovering from a tear in his left calf. Patel has been ruled out of the first test and a call on his availability for the second test will be taken depending upon his progress.
"Ajaz will join the team in Hamilton to have treatment and train. We will make a call on the second Test in Wellington closer to the time," Stead added.
"The unavailability of Colin and Ajaz has obviously had a flow-on effect to our T20 squad who are providing the replacement players for the Test squad.
"I highlighted last week how tight and complex the schedule was - so when you throw in some injuries, it really begins to challenge how you juggle your resources."
Adding to the plethora of announcements, Stead also revealed that left-arm spinning all-rounder Mitchell Santner will be the captain for New Zealand in the final of the 3-match T20I series against West Indies, starting this Friday. Santner was also added to the test squad as cover for Ajaz Patel.
"I’d like to acknowledge Mitch Santner for taking on the responsibility to captain the T20 side," Stead said. "It’s a great honour to lead your country and I know his calm demeanour along with the sheer amount of international experience he’s amassed in the past five years will hold him in good stead.
