Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has said that Indian opening batsman Rohit Sharma's absence in the limited-overs squads is a great sign for them.

Speaking in an interview with broadcaster Sony, Maxwell said, "He (Rohit) is a class performer, so consistent as an opening batsman with a couple of (three) double hundreds. So anytime he is not in the line-up against you, it is a positive."

Rohit suffered a hamstring injury during the recently concluded IPL season and subsequently was added just into the test-match squad and was rested from the ODIs and T20Is to get enough time for full recovery. With his consistent run with the bat in limited-overs cricket especially in the last 2-3 years, India will certainly miss his services.

However, Maxwell was quick to point out that India has enough and able replacements in his absence to open the innings.

“But in saying that, India have still got back-ups, more than capable of playing that role. We saw KL Rahul, the performance that he put on during the last IPL was extraordinary. Whether he opens the batting or not, I am sure he will be just as good a player.

With KL Rahul as the main wicket-keeping option for the ODIs, Mayank Agarwal may get an pportunity at the top of the order either with Rahul or Shikhar Dhawan. Talking about his Kings XI Punjab batting duo and  strength of Australia's bowling attack, Maxwell said, "They [Rahul and Mayank] have a good equation and played extremely well for King XI. But, I suppose, ODI cricket might be a bit different [from T20s] and hopefully with our bowling attack, we can put some pressure on themand with bounce in the pitches and bigger grounds as well, they play into our hands."
