Australia put up an enthralling performance as they go 1-0 up in the opening ODI of the three-match series defeating India by 66 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday (November 27). This is India's fourth successive ODI defeat - the first time since January 2016 they have lost four in a row.

The Aussie batsmen put up a mammoth target of 375 after opting to bat after winning the toss. David Warner and skipper Aaron Finch scored regular boundaries and the duo kept the scoreboard running and touched the 100-run mark in the 19th over.

It was Mohammed Shami, who handed India the first breakthrough as he dismissed Warner (69), ending their 156-run partnership. But the joy was shortlived as Steve Smith came out to bat. Smith and Finch proved too good for the Indian bowlers and took Australia past the 200-run mark in the 34th over.

Smith started playing aggressively and completed his half-century off just 36 deliveries. Finch kept plugging the gaps and went on to score his 17th ODI century, putting the hosts in a dominating position. Their 108-run stand was brought to an end in the 40th over by Jasprit Bumrah, who sent Aaron Finch (114) back to the pavilion.

Marcus Stoinis was the next batsman but failed to leave a mark as he was caught behind off Yuzvendra Chahal as the hosts were reduced to 271/3. Stoinis` dismissal brought Glenn Maxwell to the wicket.

Maxwell looked intent on starting in overdrive mode, taking the team past the 300-run mark in the 43rd over with Smith for company. Maxwell played a 45-run cameo before Shami ended his 19-ball stay at the crease in the 45th over. Maxwell was caught by Ravindra Jadeja at long-on. Holding his own, Smith completed his century off 62 balls in the 49th over.

However, in the next over, Shami sent Smith (105) back to the hut. Alex Carey and Pat Cummins scored six runs in the final over as Australia finished on 374.

Coming in to chase, Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank Agarwal got to a good start but Josh Hazlewood removed the latter for 22 and in came Virat Kohli.

The skipper Virat Kohli got a big life on 1 when he got a massive top edge to fine leg off Pat Cummins but Adam Zampa put the catch down. Virat Kohli pounced on the chance and scored two glorious boundaries off Cummins.

In the ninth over, he continued to target Cummins, however, in the 10th over, Josh Hazlewood struck twice as he removed Virat Kohli. The ball was short and slow as Kohli advanced down the track only to be cramped for room and he mistimed it to Aaron Finch at short midwicket. Two balls later, Shreyas Iyer also departed to stall India’s momentum.

KL Rahul, who was phenomenal in the IPL could not use that momentum in Australia as he came in but departed soon for 12.

The game however changed as soon as Hardik Pandya came to the crease. The game was alive until the 39th over with Pandya at the crease as he joined Dhawan when India were in trouble at 101/4.

Together, the duo gave India hope and put on 146. The injury to Stoinis made things a bit more interesting as well, however, Adam Zampa put his hand up and bowled a match-winning spell, taking out both Dhawan and Pandya, before the focus shifted from defending the target to improving the run rate.

The second ODI will be played at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) as well on November 29 at 9:10 AM IST.
