Wealth of Delhi's top 10 billionaires matches one-third of capital's GDP

Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance group, topped the list for the seventh consecutive year with the total net worth of Rs 3,71,000 crore.

The collective wealth of the 10 richest people in Delhi — a list lead by software businessmen Shiv Nadar — is equal to one third of the capital's economy.

Barclays Hurun India Rich List 2018, released on Tuesday, found that the top 10 Richie Riches of New Delhi have a combined wealth Rs 2.30 lakh crore. Delhi's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stands at Rs 6.86 lakh crore. Out of a population of 2.5 crore, 163 Delhiites made it to the list, their total wealth amounting to Rs 6.78 lakh crore.

Of the top 10 billionaires, six come from only two corporate families — the Nadars of HCL and the Mittals of Bharti Airtel. Software businessman Shiv Nadar, with a fortune of Rs 37,400 crore, tops the list and is followed by Vikram Lal of Eicher Motors (worth Rs 37,100 crore) and Roshni Nadar of HCL (worth Rs 31,400 crore) and Sunil Bharti Mittal of Bharti Airtel (worth Rs 22,500 crore). Rajiv Singh of the realty firm DLF broke into the list for the first time with a net worth of Rs 21,000 crore.

Twenty one names on the list are from the automobile and the auto component sector, followed by 11 from Capital Goods, and 10 names each from pharmaceuticals and FMCG sectors. However, in terms of share of cumulative wealth represented by each industry, software & services topped the ranking, followed by auto and auto components, FMCG and telecommunications.

At the national level, a record 214 new names were added to the billionaires list. This year, a total of 831 billionaires, with a collective wealth of Rs 53,325 crore match a quarter of India's GDP of Rs 2,11,221 crore. The total number of individuals featured in the 2018 edition has increased by a third to 831 from 617 in 2017.

Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance group, topped the list for the seventh consecutive year with the total net worth of Rs 3,71,000 crore.

"Individuals with a net worth of Rs 9,000 crore and more were featured in the top 100 rankings," said Barclays Hurun India Rich List 2018 in its statement.

Mumbai emerged as the city of the rich with 233 Mumbaikars on the list, while New Delhi and Bengaluru accounted for 163 and 69 names respectively.
