Walmart India to open 15 stores in Maharashtra

Walmart India, the World’s largest retailer is going to provide employment to 30 to 35 thousand persons by starting 15 of its stores in Maharashtra. Walmart India has identified properties for 8 new stores in eight cities in Maharashtra.

Walmart India president and CEO Krish Iyer informed that Walmart would be providing a win-win situation for farmers in India. 

He said that as far as food-grains and horticulture products are concerned, 30 to 40 per cent goes waste in handling and transport. 

He said that Walmart has inked MoU with Maharashtra government through which it would be launching 15 stores in state in 3-4 years time. He said that every store would be providing 2000 direct indirect jobs.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday launched SMART (State of Maharashtra’s Agribusiness and Rural Transformation) project during a function at Yashwantrao Chavan Center. 

As many as 46 memorandum of understanding were inked between various farmer producer groups and Corporate companies so that farmers can directly have access to market without any middleman. Iyer said that whenever Walmart opens a store which is 50,000-60,000 square feet store, we sell 60 to 70% food products.
