DNA Money had reported on May 14 that Tata Motors will soon set up an assembly plant in Roslyn near Pretoria in South Africa to cater to the African market.
Tata Motors is working on setting up a truck assembly unit in South Africa by the end of the current financial year, a top company official said on Friday.
“We are looking at assembling medium-sized and small trucks there for now,” said its India head PM Telang.
DNA Money had reported on May 14 that Tata Motors will soon set up an assembly plant in Roslyn near Pretoria in South Africa to cater to the African market.
Tata Motors planned to assemble 25 tonne trucks there, followed by 19, 15 and 7 tonne commercial vehicles, the report had said. The Prima range of trucks will also be assembled there, along with buses and cars, in due course.
The details of the unit are being worked out and initial capacity could be about 3,000-4,000 units annually, Telang said.
At present, Tata Motors exports about 2,000-3,000 trucks annually to South Africa.
The company’s truck exports in the fiscal 2010 stood at 30,000 units and it expects exports to be good this year.
Tata Motors is looking at a 10-15% rise in its domestic truck sales in fiscal 2011, said Ravi Pisharody, its commercial vehicles head.
In fiscal 2010 the company sold 373,615 units of trucks, up 41% from a year earlier.
On its Prima range, Telang said that the concept of the world truck will take at least 4-5 years to find its place in the Indian market.
“So far we have managed to sell below 100 units of our world truck,” Telang said. Tata Motors will launch 4 variants of the world truck between September and March. It will also launch 3 buses in the 7,9 and 11 tonne category during the same period. The company will also launch LCV Magic Iris nationwide by October.
Tata Motors is confident of retaining share in the Ace segment despite the imminent competition, by launching 0.5 tonne Ace and another one with a higher horsepower by December this year.
It will increase the production of Ace by 5,000 units per month to 20,000 units in the next two months.
“As Nano production moves to Sanand, we will have some capacity left at Pantnagar, which will be used for the increase in Ace production,” said R Ramakrishnan, vice-president (sales and marketing) commercial vehicles.
