The ongoing price war among domestic airlines saw another escalation on Tuesday with IndiGo and SpiceJet dropping fares across all routes, pan-India.
The announcement comes after AirAsia India announced fares at Rs 500 on its Bangalore-Kochi route. On Tuesday, SpiceJet – the second largest low-cost carrier (LCC) announced fares at Rs 1,999 across all its routes, inclusive all taxes, as an extension to its monsoon sale.
This is the 14th scheme offered by SpiceJet this year.
The airline previously launched its monsoon sale for the southern market.
"We received a good response for the South, hence we decided to extend it to pan-India," said an official who did wish to be quoted.
The scheme is valid for bookings between June 17 and 19 for travel between July 19 and September 30, and the fares may differ as per the distance.
IndiGo, the biggest LCC, on the other hand, announced similar offer for travel between the same period.
"Blue is the new vibe this summer with our all-time low fares starting @1,724 all inclusive. Book between 17-19 Jun for travel from July 19-September 30," said a tweet by IndiGo's official twitter handle.
However, fares differ on certain routes, for example, Bangalore – Hyderabad is available at Rs 1,999, Mumbai-Bangalore is at Rs 2499, while Delhi – Mumbai is at Rs 2999, as per the information available on Twitter.
Drop in airfares has become a routine, with airlines looking to grab additional seats, as competition is expected to intensify with the expansion of AirAsia India – the newest LCC in the country. AirAsia India is claiming to go pan-India by the end of this year. The airline will very soon fly to Kochi, while fares on offer are at Rs 500, the airline announced on Monday.
According to agencies, the Competition Commission of India is probing whether cartelisation among airliners is influencing the movement of ticket prices, amid sharp fluctuations in airfares.
