BlackBerry maker has suggested wider dialogue between government and industry to sort out security concerns
Canada-based Research In Motion (RIM), the maker of BlackBerry smartphone, has told the new Department of Telecom (DoT) secretary K Chandrasekhar that singling out products one by one and imposing a ban on services “would be futile and counter-productive”.
Robert E Crow, vice-president (industry, government and university relations) at RIM, has written to Chandrasekhar, suggesting wider dialogue between the government and the industry to sort out the security concerns.
While stating that RIM has comprehensively addressed the concerns raised by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) regarding BlackBerry messenger service, Crow has pointed out that the company has explained to the MHA the underlying technology linked to the enterprise service.
It is the encrypted BlackBerry enterprise service that has been giving sleepless nights to the government, as it does not have the wherewithal to access the data flowing through the enterprise network, and therefore believes that it could be a potential terror threat.
Even as Crow has said that RIM recognises the security concerns of the Indian government and the consequent need for lawful access to information, he has argued in the letter that “singling out products one by one like BlackBerry Enterprise Service in the present instance and imposing a ban on such services would be futile and counterproductive.”
It would be futile to ban the enterprise service of BlackBerry because “perpetrators of misuse of internet encrypted technologies would simply shift to any of other numerous and freely available options...,” according to RIM.
The company has added that it would be counter-productive because any ban or suspension of encryption-based solutions such as the BlackBerry Enterprise Service “would impact the information security and efficiency of both commercial and government organisations.”
There are around 1 million BlackBerry users in India.
Despite the fear of ban on the service from September over security issues, BlackBerry users and telcos offering the service got a breather till the end of October, following a meeting between top officials of the MHA, DoT and Intelligence Bureau on August 30. The government stressed after that meeting that the Canadian firm would require to put up a server in India, even for testing out the solutions that RIM itself has offered to the MHA. The government has stuck to its demand for the BlackBerry India
server persistently ever since its dialogue began with the MHA in 2008.
