Equity benchmark indices rose by over 0.5% on Monday led by gains in banking and pharma stocks amid positive global cues and foreign fund inflow.

Sensex closed 179.59 points, or 0.52%, higher at 34,911.32 after touching a high of 35,213.52 and low of 34,794.40. 

Similarly, NSE Nifty surged 66.80 points, or 0.65%, to close at 10,311.20.

Bajaj Auto was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising around 7%, followed by Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Kotak Bank, Powergrid and Axis Bank. HDFC, ONGC, TCS, HDFC Bank, Infosys and M&M were among the laggards. 

In the Nifty pack, Bajaj Auto, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and Coal India were the top gainers while WIPRO, GAIL, ONGC and HDFC were the top losers. 

Analysts said fresh foreign fund inflows buoyed market sentiment.
