MUMBAI: Tracking a weak global trend, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark, Sensex, closed lower by over 88 points on fresh profit-selling by funds.

The Sensex lost 88.03 points at 12,366.39 after touching the day's high of 12,488.57 and a low of 12,343.80 points. The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty closed 18.80 points lower at 3,569.60. It touched a high of 3,606.70 and low of 3,561.70 points.

Major losers were Housing Development, BHEL, Infosys technology, Larsen and Toubro and Ranbaxy lab.

However, a surge in share prices of Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, State Bank of India, Satyam Computers and Reliance energy saved the Sensex from major fall.
