After finding that billionaire jewellery designer Nirav Modi, his wife Ami Modi, brother Nishal Modi and uncle Mehul Choksi fled India days before the case was registered, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday approached the Interpol to locate them.

“We have approached Interpol with a request for issuing a diffusion notice, which will help us to trace the accused,” said a CBI officer.

Sources in the agency said Nirav Modi and his wife were spotted in in New York burrough Manhattan and were reportedly staying in a suite at JW Marriott’s Essex House.

Modi’s wife Ami, a US citizen, left on January 6 to join her husband at her residence in the US. Nirav, who holds an Indian passport, left India on January 1, and his brother Nishal, a Belgian citizen, departed the same day. Mehul left India on January 4.

CBI has also sought help from the immigration officials to locate the accused.
