Gulf-based Oman Air, which flies around 27,300 weekly seats from India, is in talks with the Indian government to increase its seat entitlement to 40,000 in order to expand its presence in the country.

The airline, which has been flying to India since past 25 years, currently covers 11 destinations in India from its hub in Muscat. India, at present, provide around 15% of total sales for the airline as Oman has a huge India diaspora of about six lakh settled in the country.

Oman Air chief executive officer Abdulaziz Al Raisi told DNA Money that the talks are on with the government and he is hopeful of a positive response from India.

Al Raisi said Oman has very strong relations with India, and it is happy with the current seat entitlement under the air services agreement between the two countries, but like any other airline it would like to operate more seats from the country. The carrier, which operates mainly from point-to-point destinations, is looking at Ahmedabad, Mangalore and Amritsar among other destinations once it gets further entitlement of seats.

Oman received 3.21 lakh Indian visitors in 2017, a growth of over 7% over 2016, and is expected to grow at 18% during 2018 on the back of growing demand from leisure, wedding, adventure and corporate travellers.
