NRI pensioners can now submit life certificates without hassle, here's how

As for pensioners living in India, they can use the doorstep banking Alliance service or can submit the life certificate through the post office.

Government pensioners will now be able to reduce the hassle of going to banks physically and submitting their documents. From October 1, pensioners had to start submitting their annual life certificates or Jeevan Pramaan Patra so that they could continue receiving their pensions. 

Notably, people aged 80 years or above will be able to submit their annual life certificate starting from October 1 till November 30. 

To do the same, pensioners can either physically visit the bank or avail the service at their doorstep. Provisions are also made to submit the life certificate online. Pensioners who are living abroad can also submit the same with ease. 

According to a circular which was released by the Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare (DoPPW), a pensioner living outside India also needs to follow some guidelines for submitting the Jeevan Pramaan Patra.

Jeevan Pramaan Patra - Guidelines for pensioners living abroad 

  1. If the pensioner/family pensioner is living abroad and is drawing their pension through any bank included in the Second Schedule to the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, then the Jeevan Pramaan Patra can be signed by an officer of the Bank. An exemption from personal appearance will be given if a Life Certificate signed by the above-mentioned officer of the bank is submitted.
  2. You are exempted from personal appearance if the pensioner/family pensioner is not residing in India if a life certificate is signed by a Magistrate, a Notary, a Banker, or a Diplomatic Representative of India.
  3. Through Aadhaar based biometric authentication system, a Digital Life Certificate can also be provided online.
  4. If NRI pensioners/family pensioners are unable to come to India personally, the pension can be allowed based on a certificate issued by a sanctioned official of the Indian Embassy/High Commission of India or Consul of Indian Consulate in the country where the pensioner lives. The certificate will be issued based on the photographs pasted in the PPO or picture one the Passport or any other such document.
  5. If the pensioner/family pensioner is unable to visit the Embassy of India/Consulate then they can submit the necessary documents by post to the Embassy/Consulate. A doctor's certificate should be included in this to show proof that the pensioner's/family pensioner was unable to present themselves in person. 

As for pensioners living in India, they can use the doorstep banking Alliance service or doorstep service for submitting the life certificate through the post office.
