Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that the electric carmaker has received nearly 4,00,000 orders for the new Model 3, an alert from Reuters said.

The Model 3 was unveiled last month, and is estimated to cost about $35,000 (nearly Rs 24 lakh). Musk had earlier said that the Model 3 will be making its way to India. However, the car is still about a year away from production. 

Musk unveiled the prototype of the Model 3 on April 1, in Hawthorne, California outside Los Angeles to hundreds of Tesla owners and the media.

Orders for the Model 3 are piling up quickly, with the carmaker getting as many as 1,80,000 bookings in 24 hours. At the time, Musk had said that this would amount to about $7.5 billion worth of business for the company in a day. "Future of electric cars looking bright," an overwhelmed Musk said. The orders for the upcoming car grew to 2,76,000 over the weekend after bookings started.

Tesla says that he Model 3 will be the most affordable car from its stable yet. It will be capable of running 215 miles per charge. Other models in its stable include the Tesla Model S and Model X.
