Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) is planning to expand its annual capacity to 52 million passengers by 2020, a report released by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) said. The airport handled around 48.50 million passengers in the last fiscal.

Releasing its biennial sustainability report on Tuesday, GVK-run MIAL said that despite the challenges, the airport maintained biennial growth rate in excess of 16% with number of flights touching over 900 per day. CSIA, a land starved airport, operates only one runway at a time.

As per the report, CSIA witnessed a 22% increase in domestic passengers and 13% increase in international passengers in the last two years. Recently, the airport operated 969 aircraft movements in a day — highest for any single runway airport in the world, as the air traffic movement saw an increase of 10% during the audited period.

Further, the cargo segment saw an increase of 21%.

The airport crossed 41.67 million passenger numbers in 2015-2016 and 45.15 million in 2016-17. The company has plans for Rs 3,500 crore expansion, sources had told DNA Money.

According to an earlier projection by MIAL for 2015-16, the passenger movement was estimated to reach 35 million. However, 41.67 million passengers travelled during the period, against the management estimates of touching the 40 million mark only in 2018-19.

MIAL has a slew of plans for expansion, including upgrading the runway capacity to 48 aircraft movement per hour during peak hours.

MIAL sources said with the expansion reaching saturation level and the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport still some years away, capacity expansion  from Mumbai is going to be a tough task.
