Mittal was born in Punjab's Ludhiana, in 1957. His father was Satpal Mittal, a former Rajya Sabha member and a minister in Punjab government. Even thought Sunil Bharti Mittal was born into affluence, he never wanted a life of comfort. He worked hard to succeed in life.

Sunil Bharti Mittal did his schooling from Mussoorie's boarding school. He didn't join politics like his father. He concentrated on carving his own niche.

He took a small loan of Rs 20000 from his father and started a cycle business.

In 1992, the government was auctioning mobile network licenses. Mittal's firm took part in the auction and got a license. He started Airtel Brand under this/ 

He started cellular services in 1995.

He also own Airtel Payments Bank. In January 2022, Google invested 1 billion dollars in Bharti Airtel.

His son, Shravin, runs Mittal's Bharti Global.

He and his siblings have pledged 1.1 billion dollars to charitable foundations.
