An engineer from the prestigious BITS Pilani who immigrated to Canada in search of opportunities at 22 is now the richest Indian-origin person of the country. 74-year-old self-made billionaire Bill Malhotra is one of the biggest property developers in Canada today.

The real estate king runs the company Claridge Homes, a company he founded back in 1986. Before becoming a businessman, Malhotra served as the chief structural engineer for Ottawa city from 1977 to 1986.

Born in India, Malhotra learnt the trade of civil engineering at the Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS) Pilani. He left India for Canada in 1971 and started his career working for an engineering firm. Malhotra used to visit the famous Claridges hotel in Delhi during his childhood with his father. He named his company after the same hotel.

He has constructed over 14,000 properties which includes buildings, apartments and retirement homes. His company also erected the tallest building in Ottawa, the 469-feet Claridge Icon residential tower. He has also been dubbed as the ‘Condo King’. As per Forbes, his real-time net worth is over Rs 15,570 crore ($1.9 billion).
