But Chandigarh tops in per capita usage

KOLKATA: Maharashtra emerged as the highest tea consuming state followed by Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. But most of them including Maharashtra, UP and Rajasthan slid in the pecking order, when it came to per capita consumption of tea where Chandigarh, Lakshadweep, Punjab, Gujarat and Goa ranked the highest.

While the total tea consumed in India stands at 755.52 million kg, the per capita consumption of the commonest beverage in India is at 706.1 grams.

And if you thought, West Bengal and Assam the principal tea growing states consumed more tea, think again. They ranked 9 th and 14th    in the share of total consumption. These states were among the lowest in per capita consumption, even below the coffee drinking states like Karnataka and Kerala.

Commissioned by the Tea Board, this study was collated and researched by the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, recently.

The 56th and 59th rounds were done by the NSSO between the years 2000 and 2003 to find tea consumption across India. Latest findings of the report, which are with DNA Money, show interesting trends.

Maharashtra’s share is at 14.86% out of the total Indian tea consumption, followed by 10.35% in UP in the 59 th NSSO round. In fact Maharashtra, UP, Gujarat and Rajasthan retained their positions respectively in the share of tea consumption in all the consecutive NSSO rounds.

Tea industry officials said that these markets have been strong markets, which have prompted formidable regional brands in Gujarat and Rajasthan and a host of strong national brands to compete the most in these markets.

But going by the per capita consumption of tea, Chandigarh has moved up to the highest position from the fourth position in the initial NSSO rounds. Gujarat has been consistent both on the consumption and per capita consumption levels.

Per capita consumption of tea in Maharashtra is the eight highest, while Madhya Pradesh ranks 18th and UP, one of the largest states, ranks 27th.
