Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Kalaignar's death a huge loss while Rajinikanth said that this day is the black day in the superstar's life.

M Karunanidhi, the scriptwriter turned politician had ruled the Tamil Nadu politics for over seven decades. Interestingly, the late DMK chief did not own a car,a house or even an agricultural land under his name. According to an affidavit, filed along with his nomination papers for the Tiruvarur assembly segment in 2016, Karunanidhi did not have a house and the premises where he was residing in had been donated to Anjugam Trust, to start a hospital after his life time.

Karunanidhi did not have any immoveable property but had movable assets of around Rs 13.42 crore as bank deposits and cash on hand, the affidavit stated. His first wife Dayalu Ammal has assets worth over Rs 15 crore and second wife Rajathi Ammal has about Rs 42 crore, the document mentioned.

As per the affidavit, Karunanidhi had an annual income of Rs 1.21 crore in 2014-15, Rajathi Ammal had earned Rs 1.16 crore in the same year, while Dayalu Ammal's income in that year is 9.21 lakhs.

In 2011, Karunanidhi has submitted his assets as Rs 4.93 crore. The DMK patriarch had declared moveable assets of Rs 15.34 crore for his first wife, Dayalu Ammal and Rs 20.83 crore for his second wife Rajathi Ammal.

The veteran politician is survived by his sons, former Union Minister MK Alagiri, DMK working president MK Stalin, and his daughter, Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi.

Karunanidhi was admitted to Chennai’s Kauvery Hospital on July 28 following a dip in his blood pressure.

His health condition continued to fluctuate. On July 31, doctors had advised a longer stay “due to age-related overall decline in his general health, altered liver function and haematological parameters”.

On July 31, the hospital said the leader would require an extended period of hospitalisation due to a "decline" in his general health, although his vital parameters had normalised.

Karunanidhi, born Dakshinamurthy, changed his name to Karunanidhi as it is a pure Tamil name without any Brahminical tinge.
