Landline phone subscribers in metros are growing, while other circles are showing a drop. This could perhaps be attributed to increasing number of broadband connections (which mostly come along with fixed line phones) in metros.

In the 12-month period between May 2009 and 2010, fixed line phone subscribers have grown by 2.4% in metros.

However, A circle has seen a dip of 3% in fixed line (or landline) phone user base in the past one year.

In B circle, the decline in fixed lines is as much as 6.8% and C circle has witnessed a 3.3% fall. The all-India dip in fixed line phones from May 2009 to 2010 is 3.4%, data available with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has shown.

Mobile phone services have shown maximum subscriber growth in C circle cities and towns, at 63%, during the one-year period from May 2009 to 2010. The growth is much less across other circles. While B circle has registered a growth of 51.8%, its lower in A circle at 45.4% and as low as 36.3% in the metros. The mobile penetration in the metros is significantly high and so the growth in this region is limited.

On the whole, the all-India mobile subscriber base has increased by 48.7% during the corresponding period, according to the Trai data.

In May alone, net mobile subscriber addition in metros was the lowest at 2.1 million. While in C circle, the mobile base grew by 2.4 million in May 2010, that in B circle was up by 6.3 million and A circle by 5.3 million. The all-India mobile subscriber base increased by 16.3 million in May.

In fixed line phones, metros recorded a user growth of 17,087 in May. In all other circles, the user base dipped in May.

The maximum decline was in B circle, where landline phone users fell by 0.39 million in May, followed by a dip of 42,859 in A circle and 15,224 in C circle. Across the country, the fixed line base dropped by 0.43 million in May.
